I was recently inspired by the Dollar Shave Club and their motto of “shave time, shave money. I’m a frugal lady and I always have intentions of saving time and money with almost everything I do. Not that I’m against buying things full price or taking the long route to my destination but these days as a new momma, wherever I can spare time and money I’m all about it. So I got to thinking, what do I “shave time, shave money” on?

  1. SALES!
This is a no brainer. I like to consider myself a smart lady shopper. My constant online browsing allows me the opportunity to scope out the pieces I want/need and then I stalk them until sales being. Luckily for all of us, most new trends and seasonal clothes come out a season in advance. While I don’t need winter clothes that are hitting the stores now, I can wait until they go on sale and scoop them up for a great price. Why spend full price when I can wait for a sale?
  2. Carpooling
The Beard and I work within 2 miles of each other and most days during the week our schedules overlap. Carpooling is essential for us most days so we save on gas and keep from piling on the miles to both of our cars. And while we both don’t agree with each other’s driving skills, it’s a great time for us to catch up on our day-to-day lives before we come home and have to be parents to the babe.
  3. Leftovers for lunch
I can already sense some of my friends cringing at this statement but hear me out. I’m not talking about 2-3 day left overs but meals from the night before. If you are used to cooking for 2 you know how hard it is to NOT have left overs. Most recipes are made for 4 or more, so in our simple home of 2 we always have left over food. When I got into cooking about a year ago I started taking leftovers for lunch at work the next day. Why? It was not only saving us lots of money (eating out adds up!) and I was able to enjoy all the amazing meals all over again. Since then I have become the envy of the people around me as my lunches always smell great.
  4. Meal Planning
Every sunday we plan out our meals and head to the grocery store. This has helped tremendously with saving time during the week especially with the new babe. We know what meals we’re having, when we are making them and who is accountable for them. We no longer have the fuss of trying to decide what to have for dinner and bouncing ideas back and forth for over an hour until we end up eating out. Now, dinners are served promptly once we get home which means more time with Ava.
  5. Makeup
It’s no surprise that I love make and beauty products and I love to splurge. But I’m frugal these days and can’t justify spending a ton of money on all of the products I want. I’ve set out to try to find the “drugstore” brands of products that I like and now love. Not everything works the same which means some expensive things will forever stay in my makeup bag but now I have a go to options when I’m in a bind and would rather buy a cute outfit for Ava instead of makeup for myself. Mom life.
  6. To-Do Lists
I love a good list. However if can prioritize my day, especially at work, I’m all about it. Post-its, notepads and calendar reminders make up the majority of my day and it’s become a critical time saver. I’ve determined how to squeeze in all the meetings, all of the tasks and still make time for myself.
  7. Divide & Conquer
Life as new parents can be stressful and we both want as much time with the little babe as possible. Each night we divide out what needs to be done and attack! This can range from The Beard starting the laundry to me getting Ava dressed for bed. Or me starting dinner and The Beard giving Ava a bath. Once the evening comes we both can sit around and enjoy our little bundle of joy.

How do you “shave time and shave money”

Don’t forget to check out the Dollar Shave Club to have razors shipped to your door for as low as $1 a month, depending on your blade of choice. Yes, just $1 !!

Ava –

Three months already?! Slow down kid! This month has brought even more joy and happiness to our lives. You are still a baby on the go and are experiencing so much of the world around you. You had yet another sleep over. This time with your Nana, Papaw and cousin Alivia. I think your cheeks were raw because of all the kisses Alivia gave you. She loves you so much already and I know you two will one day have a really special bond.

Also this past month you have developed quite the personality. Your coo’s and smiles aren’t without cries and mean looks. You make sure to let us know when you’re not happy and instantly smile when we cater to your needs. I think you have momma and daddy completely controlled. Each morning you wake us with the biggest toothless grin and little giggles. You are THE happiest baby when you wake up in the morning and it’s the best way for us to start off our day.

We take at least one picture a day of you and it’s always a surprise on how you will pose. When propped up or laying down you make the best faces and poses with your hands. I laugh a lot at what you do because it’s just another facet of that wonderful personality you are developing. Mini diva already!

You have also learned how to start holding your head up. The moment this happened your momma was so proud and shared the photo and video with everyone around her office. A total humble brag moment which made me feel like you were the best baby in the entire world (which you are in my eyes). You’re starting to sit up for a few seconds at a time before you turn into a lumpy potato and fall over. But it’s okay…we are getting there!

Love you always,
xox

I have a confession to make. I used to work at Abercrombie and Fitch. The good ‘ol A&F. It was my first real job that taught me anyone with a college degree should not be considered for management and we definitely shouldn’t be trusted with keys to a retail store. Aside from the crazy atmosphere I experienced I did create a long-lasting friendship with someone who would eventually be a bridesmaid in my wedding. Lauren and I share an A&F bond that will forever be cemented in history. Or the depths of that backroom. I digress. Abercrombie has been under fire for many years now and the culture is only one that few understand. I don’t stand for anything they wanted to build their brand upon but I was apart of the company during a different time. Lately they have realized that things should probably change. You can’t get away with skinny, naked models and sky high prices forever. They have since rebranded and are attempting to save their business. What has possibly changed? Besides lower prices and a different fashion forecast, they offer BLACK. It was ingrained in me from day one that A&F does not sell black nor will they ever sell the color black. So for years I wore only brown and navy and black was a foreign concept to my wardrobe. They have pieces (including a black leather jacket) that I would actually wear and that’s saying a lot…I’m 32 years old and not the epitome of the A&F gal. My favorites this week are some of my picks from their current collection. Do yourself a favor and just look at their site. Let’s hope that they keep heading in the right direction and keep offering that black as a color in their lineup.

shrimp-fajitas

Seafood/Fish has yet to be featured on Recipe Thursday. During my pregnancy when the food posts started I had a huge hate for fish. The smell could make me gag and dry heave and we definitely didn’t want any of that. Also, I have never been a big seafood/fish person. Maybe the smell at the grocery store turned me off and maybe there were moments when I had it prepared in a poor way. Whatever the reason, I’ve never been a huge fan. But The Beard was determined to change that this past month when he prepared Shrimp Faijtas. I already planned a back up meal in my mind thinking that this was not going to turn out in my favor. I’m here to say I was pleasantly surprised and this will in fact make it into the dinner rotation. Shrimp Fajitas are a different twist on your typical beef or chicken fajitas and just as satisfying.

You’ll Need:

  • Medium onion sliced into long strips
  • 1 Red and 1 Green bell pepper sliced into long strips
  • 1 lb shrimp cleaned, deveined
  • Clove of garlic chopped
  • 1/2 lime
  • 1/4 cup cilantro
  • Tortillas
  • Olive oil
  • Salt + pepper to taste

In a skillet combine 2 tbsp olive oil, peppers, onions, salt and pepper – tossing well to coat. Cook until the onions are carmelized and the peppers are soft – roughly 20 minutes.

Season the shrimp with salt and pepper and add to a frying pan with 2 tbsp olive oil and the garlic. Be careful to not over cook the shrimp or you’ll be left with rubber bits. It will only take 2-3 minutes for the shrimp to be cooked all the way through. Once the shrimp is cooked, season with lime juice and cilantro.

Pile your fajita mixture onto a tortilla with your favorite toppings and you have homemade shrimp fajitas!

The-Makeup-Lady-nov-2013-ver1

We are starting a new series here on The Makeup Lady called “Recreate The Look” where we will feature favorite beauty looks from the ready-to-wear runway collections. Most times the beauty is overshadowed by the beautiful and intricate runway fashions. Once you start looking into the details of the makeup in each show you find that most are quite wearable and easy to recreate, hence our “Recreate The Look” series.

Starting off we will be focusing on the Fall 2014 RTW looks of Burberry Prorsum, Rag & Bone and Michael Kors. From fall plums, to extreme liner to a fresh natural face, it is everything we will want to try for the fall.

First up, Burberry Prorsum. I knew when I mentioned this series idea to Julia she would be on board, especially when the word Burberry was part of the suggestion. If you follow her blog you know she has extreme love for Burberry, but then again who doesn’t? Burberry is the iconic British luxury brand famously known for distinctive tartan pattern. Burberry Prorsum is the fashion forward collection of the famous brand. The fall 2014 RTW collection centered around the boho chic Bloomsbury Girls or a modern day Virginia Woolf. Soft plum eyes, nude cheeks and barely there lips top off this look as one of my favorites of the fall shows.

It’s easier than you might think to recreate this first look. Burberry fortunately has their own beauty line and lucky for us, have included a Bloomsbury Girl collection to help everyone recreate this dreamy look.

It’s time for me to come clean and be serious. I have am an addict of day dreaming about the finer things in life. Fancy baubles, bags, dream vacations…you name it, I love it. The wishing and wanting goes hand in hand with working hard to achieve the pretty things I want. I was raised to work hard and reward yourself with nice things. Hard work pays off, right? But it’s not always the case. Sometimes my dreams are a little too unattainable even for my type-a personality. It takes a bit more than working 50+ hours a week, working hard towards my Pinterest board dreams to come up with what I would really want.

I got to thinking about what I really love after Julia recently had me fill out a mini blurb about myself for her site. I posed some similar questions to friends and the answers not only shocked me but helped me learn a little bit more about each person. The opportunity to spend money on material things can show people’s wishes, desires and something about who they innately are. Most people have quick answers, because those are the true day dreams. Others had to take their time to really consider what they would spend their money on and why. Isn’t it funny how we all approach the topic in a different way?

There are quite a few fashion/clothing related posts on our blog weekly, but my ultimate splurge wouldn’t be on clothes. No. It would be on something much different. I can wish for all the clothes I want but destinations are the key to my ultimate dream happiness.  The location constantly changes and in the moment I would love to visit the Amalfi Coast in Italy. A friends trip, which would include the babe of course, traveling down the coast. Cliffs, blue skies and breathtaking views.  When I posed the same question to The Beard his answer couldn’t possibly be further apart on the spectrum of splurging. His response, which seems so typical as a man, would be a giant tv or to pay for our child’s college tuition. I guess one of us has to be the dreamer and the other with their feet firmly planted on the ground. If I had to be a realist my answer would be closer to The Beard’s. Taking care of and financially providing for our child is something of extreme importance. But we’re dreamers here today and it’s okay to step outside of reality and have a little fun.

So I pose the question to you… If given the opportunity to splurge on one thing, and one thing only, what would it be and why? You can give a philosophical approach of how you may help to spread world peace, cure cancer or be downright selfish in the moment, like me, and splurge it on your dream Pinterest worthy home. This is a judge free zone, so dream away and share them below. Then take the time to ask those around you because their answers might surprise you as well!

Losing this baby weight has proven to be more challenging than anticipated. Not that I can say I’m working my hardest to lose it, but this last half is being stubborn. I’ve had to give into working out on a more regular-ish basis to feel satisfied with my progress. I’m still on my daily plan that I started back in August but I had to make modifications to work within my working mom career life. It’s not easy balancing it all and I’m still learning. To keep myself motivated I invest in some great athletic apparel. New sports bras because my old ones were way too tight and way too small. Thank you baby for the boobs. New pants and shorts because these hips don’t lie. I’m not the small size I once was. I even started branching out with different activities. Last Saturday I did yoga at Great American Ballpark on the field, which was a pretty incredible experience. Tomorrow I’m jumping into a spinning class – let’s hope I don’t barf on everyone from over-exerting myself. This week my Friday Favorites are all about the cute pieces I have started to invest in. If I’m going to work out I want to look good while doing it.

pepper-steak

It’s surprising that I have yet to share this recipe on the blog. We make this meal at least 3 times a month, if not more, because it’s The Beard’s favorite meal to eat and to prepare. Based on our work schedules he has the opportunity to make dinner least twice a week. I know that when he’s in charge Pepper Steak will make its way onto our table. I’m not complaining because it’s delicious and a good recipe to have when you need a quick dinner. It takes no time at all and can literally be made with everything you likely have on hand. Serve it on rice, or rice noodles(my favorite) and you have a complete meal.

You’ll need:

  • 12oz round beef cut into thin strips
  • 3tbsp and 4 tsp of low sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice wine
  • 5 tsp vegetable oil
  • 3 tsp cornstarch
  • 1 medium onion cut into strips
  • 2 bell peppers cut into thin strips
  • crushed red pepper flakes
  • pepper to taste

In a bowl combine 4 tsp soy sauce, 1 tsp corn starch and 1 tbsp rice wine. Slice the meat into thin slices, almost as if you’re making meat for fajitas. Place into the bowl and set aside to marinade. Heat a wok or pan on high with 3 tsp vegetable oil and add your meat. Cook for a few minutes, turing the pieces over until they are browned. Remove the meat and add in your veggies with the remaining oil. While the peppers and onions cook down, combine the remaining soy sauce and cornstarch into a bowl. Once the peppers and onions have soften, add the meat back in with the soy sauce mixture. Let cook for a few minutes allowing the sauce to thicken.

When serving, sprinkle with pepper and crushed red pepper flakes to taste. Maybe even a little cilantro because that’s our favorite way to top it off.

Within the past week I saw an increase in the amount of visitors to our site and our Facebook page. It started off as a sweet push from my husband to remind everyone that we are here and what I do with my downtime (aside from a full time job, wife, momma) and keeping this blog afloat. I felt full of love that he, one who never gets on Facebook, wanted to help us out. This little side blog of mine is starting to flourish and become more than I ever expected. It started off as a whim to cure my boredom and start a hobby that could be uniquely mine.  I always enjoyed writing, secretly, and finally found a passion that I never knew existed. From what began as a random assortment of thoughts, pictures and my daily life turned into this well oiled machine that found its groove and kept on moving.

Overtime I wanted more for this little blog. I found my favorite daily reads from blogs and wanted ours to be just as special. But when you’re competing against a group of people all doing the same-ish thing with the same type of goal in mind, you don’t really stand out. As unique as I felt we were/are, it wasn’t enough. I wasn’t about to sell myself out and start advertising on our site and going by means of desperateness…this was never a money making venture in the beginning nor is it now. I just wanted people to read and relate to the content we put out. Along the way I found Julia who has not only become my blog-business partner but a great friend. We bonded over the same issues and issues that plagued our blogs and had the same passions of wanting to be unique and stand out. She’s been a huge supporter of my content and part of my success – without her weekly How She’d Wear It posts I don’t think I would have some of the viewers that I do. It’s crazy how when you are searching to stand out above the rest you can find someone that struggles just as much and you bond over it and then become each others cheerleaders.

Now to present day: my husband supporting the blog on his Facebook and our readership growing in the matter of a few days. It hit me – why not do a giveaway. As Julia put it, who doesn’t love free shit? This kind of goes back to the not being desperate idea but I felt that we were well on our way to something special. The more people understand my vision, my life and our content, the more they could relate and hopefully stick around for daily and weekly reads. So a giveaway was born and I took to Facebook to get it started. I was going for 100 Facebook Page Likes before we would start our giveaway. An added incentive to help grow our readership but make people happy in the process.

The response was overwhelming. In my mind I imagined it would take a few weeks to reach 100. In just 3 short days the goal was achieved. 3 days! We went from 58 likes to 100 in 3 days. I am overwhelmed with so many emotions – happiness, joy and love. 100 Likes may not seem like a large number but for me it’s a huge milestone. So this giveaway is well worth it!

Now for the good stuff that everyone’s been waiting for. The free stuff! The one thing that stood out to me was hair product. Half of this blogging duo deals with hair on a daily basis and it only seemed right to pull from his work life. I could pull from mine but then you all would be left with school desks and chairs – not as exciting. It’s been mentioned in our Must Haves post previously and quite possibly my products of the summer…
