When we received a free gym membership to Better Bodies Fitness, just for being a resident in our apartment complex, we decided this was a sign to get our lazy butts into shape. The catch was that we had to go at least 4 times a month. Only 4 times you say? Not bad considering there are 30/31 days in a month (sometimes 28, but you get the point).
The problem….
We are lazy.
We like routine and we like to keep to that routine. We are officially “that” couple. It’s nice after a 10-11 hour day of working to come home, make dinner and just snuggle on the couch. When you have a wedding to prepare for, and age starts to take over your body, you realize that maybe this routine should be altered a little.
Instead we find ourselves rushing to get in 4 visits before the month is over. Example: I have been to the gym Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and now today. I will blame this month on the sickness that kept me away but who am I kidding…I’m essentially lazy.
It’s a chore in itself to get yourself to the gym. I have the “gym-phobia” where I think everyone is watching me, that someone is critiquing my work out, judging what I’m doing or just laughing when I’m out of breath. Truth be told, I’m sure many of us have this same “gym-phobia”. I timed my visits to the gy just right – after work when I’m off at 8pm and no one is really at the gym. The problem now, all the “New Year, New You” resolution people are at the gym and crowding up my normal ghost town of a gym.
Yes I’m complaining but it is because it makes me feel better.
It’s my 4th day in a row at the gym and I’ll be honest when I say I feel amazing. I have a little more energy and I’m just proud of myself for getting my ass out of bed early, or dragging my tired ass from work straight to the gym. Yes I’m patting myself on the back.
But I have a long way to go. I made goals for myself that were never close to be obtained last year. I wanted to run more, I wanted to do my first 5K and I wanted to get into yoga. Running consistently fell to the side, and yoga happened only a few times.
With our wedding in August I want to be in better shape. I don’t want to be flabby, loose or just not perfect enough for my dress. She is absolutely stunning and I need to do that dress justice. By no means do I want to be rail thin and gross. Honestly, I’ll take the body in the first picture above. Please and thanks.
I said I wasn’t going to make New Years Resolutions but I am, kinda…
- Dance for at least 30 minutes a day. This is not only fun and keeps The Beard laughing at my dance moves while brushing my teeth but you’re giving yourself a mini workout at the same time.
- Get into yoga. My free gym membership gives me the perks of free yoga classes! They are basic and intermediate skill levels but they are FREE. I’m dumb for not taking advantage of this more.
- Be consistent with the gym at least 2-3x a week. I don’t want to bulk up and I don’t want to be The Hulk. I just want to be pretty. I’m not asking for much.
- Eat better. This has been ongoing as I get major chocolate cravings like most other women. I’m a force that can’t be stopped. However, I will say my diet is much improved and I have eliminated most snacks and junk food.
I have MAJOR gym phobia! I nodded my head through this entire post. Dan and I are “that” couple. The only reason why I work out is because he’s a workout nut. Dinner and hanging out, exactly.
I had an “incident” with an older man Wednesday night that just kept watching me, or so I thought. Who really knows. About 10 minutes in I just went home. There is just too much stress with the gym. I really need a good workout partner that won’t judge me or be better than me.
That would psych me out too. Sometimes I know it’s all in my head but I just want to workout alonnnne. I like the gyms that dim the lights
That gym phobia definitely goes away after a consistent routine. Eventually, you’ll start noticing the same “gym rats” that workout around the same time you do and realize that everyone is really minding their own business. And yoga is a must for the mind and body! I’m sure it will do you great especially with all that stress from wedding planning. Good luck!
Thanks! I did yoga once with Jen, and that was such a great time only because she brought donuts for after. I have to think that isn’t the healthiest but it was a good incentive to get through it
